We are one newsroom, one union. And we’re headed to a vote
It’s official: We are #1Newsroom1Union. The National Labor Relations Board rejected management’s effort to exclude dozens of journalists from our union, and we are now headed to an election.
The NLRB regional director on Thursday ruled in our favor, finding that even though we have different jobs, we still have a “shared community of interest.” This decision follows a hearing in March, in which the Southern California News Group sought to delay the vote and argued that we should be split into separate unions: reporters, clerks and photographers in one unit and copy editors, page designers, digital producers, graphic artists and social media producers in the other.
We fought back against the company’s attempt to split us up by testifying to the facts: we are all journalists working together toward the shared, daily goal of providing the news to our readers and communities.
The NLRB’s decision this week affirmed our right to unionize as one newsroom and let our voices be heard together. And now, it’s time to vote!
The NLRB will mail ballots to roughly 140 editorial workers on May 21. They are due back before the vote count on June 11.
We are proud of our colleagues who testified at the hearing and helped ensure the NLRB made the right decision. When we fight, we win.
Thank you to those outside our newsroom who stood in solidarity with us throughout the hearing process.
Just as we’ve done from the start, we will continue to build our majority. We are one newsroom and one union, and we are one step closer to having our seat at the table.
