Kyle Goon: Why we need a union

In an era fraught with misinformation, journalists serve an essential function to local communities to find the truth and hold powerful figures and institutions accountable while also illustrating the color and vibrancy of modern life. At the same time, the people who practice journalism — who are members of the very communities they cover — face adverse circumstances from within their own companies due to economic forces outside their control and ownership that is too quick to cut budgets and people out even when newspapers earn a profit. The rights of workers to negotiate for their jobs and resources need to be protected. What helps support journalists also helps support good journalism.

Kyle Goon is a reporter for SCNG.
