Gilbert Manzano: Why we need a union

Covering sports can be a 24/7 job and that is often overlooked by understaffed newsrooms. Working on Christmas to cover practice is part of the gig, but asking reporters to take an extra day off to avoid holiday pay isn’t right. The practice schedule won’t change to accommodate that. It’s frustrating not knowing when to take vacation after a demanding season because there aren’t enough reporters to help in case of breaking news. With the Guild, we’ll be protected for these situations.
