David Allen: Staff cut to the bone

Curious why your local Southern California News Group newspaper is a shadow of its former self? After years of budget cuts, the reporting staff at most of our papers can now fit comfortably in a Honda Civic, if not a Smart car. Some staffers haven't had a pay raise since Obama's first term. Come on, even Burger King gives raises. The Ebenezer Scrooges who own these newspapers obviously don't care about investing in them, only about siphoning off the profits, and their disinterest is killing local journalism. Is it any wonder we want to unionize?

David Allen is a columnist for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin who has been writing for newspapers since 1987.
