Hayley Munguia: Why we need a union

Long Beach is the seventh biggest city in California, and the newspaper that has covered the city since 1897 has been cut to just a few reporters and a single editor — who is also tasked with editing the Torrance Daily Breeze. Long Beach, like the rest of the communities covered by the Southern California News Group, deserves a newspaper with a large, diverse staff, and those staff members deserve to be well-compensated and well-treated. Our owners have proved they're not up to the task of accomplishing those very basic goals, so it's important for us to unionize so we can advocate for ourselves and for the communities we cover.

Hayley Munguia is a reporter for the Long Beach Press-Telegram/SCNG.
